About Dunelm

Dunelm is the UK’s No. 1 Homewares retailer offering over 26,000 quality products across more than 28 different departments. The business operates from over 150 ‘out-of-town’ superstores, and provides further ‘multi-channel’ convenience through online, mobile, catalogue, telephone ordering and reserve & collect propositions. Dunelm was founded in 1979 by Bill and Jean Adderley who started by selling ready-made curtains from a market stall in Leicester.

Dunelm aim to grow its overall business by 50% over the next few years which include the expansion of its stores to 200 and further developments to its online offerings. A special focus will be given to Dunelm’s store presence in the London and South East parts of the UK.

The Challenge

Dunelm acquired the former 28,500sqft Beales Department Store that forms a large part of the Forum Centre Horsham in July 2016. The project included the refurbishment and re fitting the store originally built in the 2000s. The store is laid across three floors and the proposed programme of works totalled nine weeks.

50% of the main sales area has residential apartments built directly above. Special care had to be taken when suspending / removing any pipework’s from these areas which contain an acoustic barrier fitted to the underside of various structural soffits. Considering the size of the store and the scope of work, nine weeks was an ambitious short term programme.

The Solution

A & F Sprinklers designed, stripped and installed new sprinkler protection to the New Ground Floor Sales Area Mezzanine, Cash Office, Toilets, Coffee Shop, Customer Collection & Store Room and Ground Floor and First Floor Warehouses.

The sprinkler works took approximately four weeks to complete. The works also included the removal of all 300 ceiling sprinkler heads and associated pipework’s back to the mains pipes in the main Ground Floor sales areas allowing all the remaining sprinkler pipes to be painted in situ. A total of 200 new ceiling and void sprinkler heads were installed in the newly created areas. The modifications were designed to LPC rules incorporating BSEN 12845. Despite several store layouts changes whilst the refurbishment works were on going, the sprinkler works completed on programme and the store opened on time in November 2016 ready for the Christmas trading period.

The Benefits

The store opened to queuing customers and has already been proved to be a popular addition to the Forum Centre which has its anchor store open again. The new store now employs over 50 people and stocks over 20,000 different products. The move has seen Dunelm finally secure a presence in Horsham’s busy town centre.

New store manager Tom Sowry said:

“We are looking forward to becoming a new neighbor to the Horsham community. “There is a strong retail offering within the town but we’ve spotted a gap in the market for Dunelm’s extensive collection of homewares and hope we can cater for the diverse range of shoppers within the community”

A & F Sprinklers also provide a rolling maintenance and inspection programme, training for employees and 24 hour call out service for Dunelm’s complete peace of mind.
